EHTP opens a photography exhibition by João Tenente de Seixas

The Porto Hotel and Tourism School (EHTP) is today opening a photographic exhibition by João Tenente de Seixas, an event that celebrates not only the images themselves, but also a personal journey deeply shaped by a passion for photography.

The photographer’s interest began in childhood, when, at the age of nine, he received his first camera — a simple Kodak film camera. In an era before digital photography, each photograph required time, precision and a keen eye. This fascination endured over the years and evolved with the use of more sophisticated equipment, notably his father’s camera, which opened up new technical and creative possibilities for him.

During his teenage years, João Tenente de Seixas began to consolidate his knowledge, spurred on by reading the book *ABC, A Practical Guide to Photography*. The development of his first roll of film marked a decisive moment, awakening his awareness of a vast visual universe waiting to be explored.

In the early 1980s, he took part in training courses organised by the FAOJ (now the IPDJ), led by Jorge Viana Basto, whom he regards as his mentor. It was in this context that the photographs now on display were taken, captured during a practical class in 1983 — images that reflect not only a period in time, but also the development of an artistic vision.

From 2020 onwards, this collection of photographs gained new visibility by featuring in various exhibitions and cultural projects, such as “Os Santos d’Afurada”, “Circum-Navegando… Do Local ao Global” and “Afurada”. One of the images is still available on the Google Arts & Culture platform.
